Mandatory Homework
To supplement each student’s further exploration of Foods and Nutrition, the following homework has been assigned:
Weekly
Students are to read the "Savor" section of the "Star Ledger" daily newspaper. This section appears on Wednesday. Students should read the food-related articles and the nutrition Q and A column. This activity encourages students to read and interpret "Work-Place Texts" as required by the mandated tests like the HSPT and the Tera Nova. It is also an exercise that relates current events to class work.
Activities
Students should have ordered various publications as directed by the instructor. The purpose of this activity was to have the student order consumer publications by letter, telephone, or Internet. When the student receives his/her updated periodical it should be brought in for credit to show that the student did in fact complete the assignment.
Students are also required to keep an updated notebook which is checked for completeness each marking period. This project is heavily weighted in the total evaluation of the students progress. At the end of the course, each student will have a valuable reference.
Uniform
Students are required to wear a clean apron and a hair covering for each and every laboratory experience. When the student is unprepared he/she will lose points on the final evaluation.
Research Project
Students will be required to prepare a presentation during the study of "International Foods." The project requires both a written and oral presentation. Students are experienced in public speaking, sharing opinions, and demonstrating their practical skills. This is an opportunity to put all of the elements together. It is a group project which requires participation from each member of the team. The presentation outline and evaluation model will be presented in April. This project will be due in May. Parents are invited to participate.
